Marla size differs by city and society
The Marla is not one fixed size in Pakistan. That is why two "5 Marla" houses can look so different. Use the size written in your documents:
- 225 sq ft: DHA, Bahria Town, LDA Avenue 1 and most private housing societies.
- 250 sq ft: used in some older Lahore localities and by some dealers.
- 272.25 sq ft: the official Punjab revenue Marla, used in land records (fard) and rural land.

How the conversion works
Everything is converted through square feet: 1 Kanal = 20 Marla, 1 square yard = 9 sq ft, 1 square metre = 10.764 sq ft and 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft. For example, 10 Marla at 225 sq ft is 2,250 sq ft, which is 250 square yards.
Frequently asked questions
How many square feet are in 1 Marla?
It depends on where the land is. Most new housing societies, including DHA Lahore and Bahria Town, use 225 sq ft. Some Lahore areas use 250 sq ft, and the traditional Punjab revenue Marla is 272.25 sq ft. Always check the measure written in your allotment letter or registry.
How many Marla are in 1 Kanal?
One Kanal is always 20 Marla. So 1 Kanal is 4,500 sq ft with a 225 sq ft Marla, or 5,445 sq ft with a 272.25 sq ft Marla.
How many Kanal are in 1 acre?
One acre is 43,560 sq ft. Using the revenue Marla of 272.25 sq ft, that is exactly 8 Kanal or 160 Marla.
Is a 5 Marla house in DHA the same size as 5 Marla in an old area?
No. 5 Marla in DHA (225 sq ft Marla) is 1,125 sq ft, while 5 Marla on the revenue measure is 1,361 sq ft, about 21% bigger.
How do I convert square yards to Marla?
Multiply square yards by 9 to get square feet, then divide by the Marla size. For example, 120 sq yd = 1,080 sq ft = 4.8 Marla at 225 sq ft.
