How the size and payback are worked out

  1. System size = monthly units ÷ 120 units per kW, rounded up to the next 0.5 kW.
  2. Monthly saving = units used at home × your unit price + exported units × the buyback rate.
  3. Payback = system cost ÷ yearly saving.

Payback assumes today's electricity price stays the same. Electricity prices in Pakistan have mostly gone up, which would shorten the payback. Panels lose about 0.5% of output a year, and inverters usually need replacing once in 10 to 12 years.

Frequently asked questions

How many units does 1 kW of solar produce in Pakistan?

About 120 units a month on average, more in summer and less in winter and in smog or cloudy weeks. Lahore and Karachi get roughly 5 peak sun-hours a day.

Is net metering still available?

For new connections, NEPRA replaced net metering with net billing under the Prosumer Regulations 2026. Units you export are bought at a much lower rate (around Rs 11 per unit) than the price you pay for imported units. Consumers with an existing net metering agreement keep their terms until it expires. Confirm the current buyback rate with your DISCO.

Why does using solar power at home save more than exporting it?

Each unit you use directly saves the full price of a unit from the grid (often Rs 45 to Rs 60 including taxes), while an exported unit earns only the buyback rate. Running ACs, pumps and washing machines in the daytime increases your savings.

What does the system cost include?

The cost per kW should include panels, inverter, structure, wiring, protection and installation. Batteries are extra. Prices change often, so enter quotes from local installers.

On-grid, hybrid or off-grid?

On-grid is cheapest and gives the fastest payback but stops during load-shedding. Hybrid adds batteries for backup at a higher cost. Off-grid suits places without a reliable grid connection.
